Tanchoi is a weaving technique practiced in parts of Northern India. This art, which originated in China, was brought to India by three brothers having the surname ‘choi.’ The technique therefore came to be referred to as ’tanchoi,’ which literally means ‘three chois.’
The weaving involves a satin base and an extra weft woven over the fabric to create the patterns. The background color is bright blue, purple, green or red. The patterns consist of images of flying birds, paired peacocks surrounded by flowers and baskets containing flowers. The designs are mostly of Chinese origin. Weavers even integrated the Indian motifs, like the mango, into these designs.
