A Tabla Tarang is a collection of Tabla ‘dayans’ (right hand drum), numbering from 10 to 16. The number of drums depends on the melody to be played. The ‘bayan’ (left hand drum) which is the bass component of the Tabla is not used in this arrangement. The word ‘tarang’ literally means ‘waves’ referring to the arrangement of drums in the order of notes.
The ‘dayans’ in the Tabla Tarang are placed in a semi-circle pattern in front of the player. They are arranged in an ascending order of notes, the bass notes to the left and the treble notes to the right. The total range of the note is 2 octaves. The lowest-pitched drum has a diameter of 16 cm, while the highest- pitched drum has a diameter of 11 cm. This arrangement of the drums enables an artist to combine rhythm, melody and harmony.
