Szechwan Pepper is rust colored with hair-thin stems and open ends. It grows mainly in rich woodlands with moist soils. The dried berries look like tiny beechnuts. The rough skin splits open to reveal a brittle black seed. The spice used is the empty husks. The leaves are fresh, vacuum-packed or pickled.
Szechwan Pepper is an ingredient in Chinese five-spice powder and shichimi togarashi, a Japanese seven-flavour seasoning.
