Svanga, also called Sangeet, is a folk form prevalent in
Haryana and
Punjab. It is believed to have been developed in the late 18th century. Svanga is based on the ballads and semi-historical stories. Performed by men, it is generally a humorous dramatic performance enacted in open air. The costumes are simple. Dialogues dominate the show, with songs occupying a secondary position. Svanga is performed during gay occasions.
