Surpeti is an Indian drone instrument similar to the
Harmonium. It is also called Swar Pethi and Sruti Box. It is a small free reed organ, whose only function is to provide the drone. Surpeti has two basic forms, one is manual and the other is electronic. Unlike the Harmonium, it has no keys and can play no melody. It is mostly used by
Hindustani and
Carnatic musicians.
