Small Indian Civet




Small Indian Civet (Scientific name, Viverricula indica) is a cat like animal having relatively long forelegs and conspicuous rounded ears. The body is sandy-buff to grayish-white spotted with blackish patches in parallel horizontal lines. All four legs are marked with small white patches, and are blackish or very dark brown.

The tail, clearly marked with 9-10 concentric black rings, is two-third the length of head and body. The throat and breast are grayish-white with two thick black semicircular bands on the upper throat. The animal weighs up to 3kg. The head and body length range between 450 and 630 mm, while tail length varies from 369 to 413 mm.

Small Indian Civet lives in long grasses and scrub, and is nocturnal and normally solitary. It feeds on rodents, lizards, insects, small birds, birds’ eggs and fruits.
