Siberian Crane

Siberian Crane (Grus leucogeranus) is the third most endangered crane species in the world. It is unique among cranes with its serrated bill, which enables it to feed easily on underground roots and on slippery prey items. It has white plumage and can be distinguished by the white cap and red mask, which reaches from behind the eye to the bill. Females are slightly larger than males.

The bird uses wetlands for feeding, nesting and roosting. It prefers wide areas of shallow fresh water with good visibility. Its nest is a flat mound of grasses and sedges. Usually, two eggs are laid between May and mid-June. The bird feeds on plants, roots, seeds, and berries. Small mammals, fish and frogs are also taken.

The Keoladeo Ghana National Park had been the winter abode of the central flock of Siberian Cranes till 2001.
