Shahkund

Shahkund is a historically and archeologically significant town in Bhagalpur District of Bihar. It is around 10 km south-east of Sultanganj.

The major attraction of the town is a big tank built near the tomb of Shah Saheb. Shahkund literally means ‘tank of Shah.’

In 7th century, the town was under the control of Shashanka, a king of an erstwhile princely state of Bengal. During the recent excavation, remnants belonging to the early medieval period were found. The image of Narasimha, excavated from here, is one of the most representative sculptures of the period. This ascribes the fact that the town had a glorious past.

Set at the foot of Kheri Hill and blessed with natural beauty, Shahkund is an ideal destination for picnickers. Bhagalpur, the district headquarters, is around 15 km north-east.

Patna Airport is the nearest airport. Sultanganj Railway Station is the nearest railhead.
