Satya Narayan Vrata is a fast observed by the Hindus on the full moon day, especially on the occasions like Kartik, Vaisakh,
Shravan, Chaitra Poornima and
Sankranti . In some cases, it is also observed on new moon day.
During this fast, Lord Narayana (Lord Vishnu) is worshipped. Apart from observing fast, a priest is invited to the home for narrating a story related to the Lord. It is believed that by observing this fast and hearing the story one is freed from all miseries.
A token amount is gifted to the priest and ‘prasadam’ is distributed. The ‘prasadam’ need not be made of expensive food items. Small amounts of curd and fruits are also required. The total duration of the ceremony lasts for three hours. Some people also observe fast for the whole day for the fulfillment of their desires.
