Sarinda

Sarinda is a stringed musical instrument mainly played by the tribes in Bihar and Jharkhand. It is a melody instrument and produces high voice.

The instrument is constructed with a single piece of teak wood. It consists of wooden frame, hide, string and bow. It was designed such that the body is deeply pinched and looks as if it has two parts. The lower part is pear shaped and has a hide covering. The upper part is wing shaped. There are three strings, bridged by a block of wood at one end and are tied to the pegs at the other. The player uses bow, made of the hair of tails of animals or silk strings, for playing it.

The instrument accompanies Bichar Gan, Murshidi Gan, songs for boat races and Kavi Gans.
