Sargam, also known as Swararth, is a vocal art music form in
Hindustani Classical Music. The composition involves only the names of the notes in a particular Tala and
Raga without using words. This form is termed as 'Swaravarta' in books on
Sitar of the 19
th century, as it was used by Sitar players. Later the name is converted to Sargam Geet and again as Sargam, which is sung along with
Khayal performances.
