Saranga Deva was a proficient Carnatic musicologist of the 13th century. His family came from the region of
Jammu and Kashmir and settled down in the Deccan in central India. He has to his credit Sangita Ratnakara, which is a classical prose work depicting the ancient theory and performance of Indian music.
Saranga Deva was threatened by the foreign powers of that time, but he managed to overcome all troubles and made remarkable contributions to Indian music. For his immense knowledge of music, he was acclaimed as Nissanka.
