Santal Tribe

Santal is one of the biggest tribal groups in India. With a population of over 3 million, they are spread out across Bihar, West Bengal and northern Orissa .Santals speak Santali, and is a pre-Dravidian tribe which is non-hindu. They live in villages and about a dozen villages form a group called a pargana.

The Santals were originally hunters but now are mostly agriculturists. Banam is a unique musical instrument of this tribe. They are strong believers in witchcraft and worship bongas(spirits).
