Sanku Vadyam

Sanku Vadyam is a musical concert performed using conch shell. These concerts are mainly held in Tamil Nadu.

The musical instrument used for these concerts is the ‘sanku’ (conch shell), which is fitted with a silver pipe. Sound is produced by blowing air into the pipe. Different sounds can be produced by the varying the air pressure and volume. This instrument sounds similar to the clarinet and the mouth organ played together.

It is accompanied by other percussion instruments. A variation of the conch shell is sometimes used in concerts. This particular musical organ contains an extra five-inch pipe connected to the mouthpiece of the conch shell. The Pandaram family of Palani is renowned for this type of musical concert.
