The sun passes through the twelve houses of the zodiac in twelve months. Each entry of the sun into a house of the zodiac is called a sankramana or sankranti, which means a transition or change. The sun's entry into each house of the zodiac is not regarded as equally holy. Makara Sankranti is considered specially sacred and important.
