Sagun Bhakti

Worship of God through Idols

Sagun Bhakti is the worshipping of God through the medium of idols. This system believes that God has a certain physical form. The word ‘sagun’ means ‘having qualities,’ referring to the physical attributes of god.

Sagun Bhakti is one of the two forms of worship prevalent in Hinduism. The other form of worship is the Nirgun Bhakti, which believes in the existence of a formless all-pervading Almighty. Both these kinds of worship are given equal prominence in the Bhagavad Gita.

The followers of Sagun Bhakti strongly believe in the physical nature of the God. They see God as the one who comes to each one’s rescue during times of adversity. They believe that society should be divided on the basis of caste. This system of worship promotes the concept of reincarnation. Saint Tulsidas and Saint Surdas were prominent saints, who propagated Sagun Bhakti.
