Saffron is a small bulbous perennial cultivated for its large, scented, blue or lavender flowers. In India, it is mostly found in
Jammu and Kashmir.
The flowers have a trifid, orange-colored stigma which along with the style-tops yields the saffron of commerce. Saffron is used in Moorish, Mediterranean and Asian cuisines.
It possesses antispasmodic, diaphoretic, carminative, emmenagogic and sedative properties. It is also known as Kumkuma and Zafran.
