Rupshu

Rupshu, situated at an altitude of 4,600 to 5,000 m above the sea level, is the highest inhabited part of the Changthang plateau. It is Ladakh’s easternmost and most elevated region that runs in to the western Tibet's high plains. Rupshu lies on the trade route from Lahaul to western Tibet and comes under the restricted areas of Ladakh region in Jammu and Kashmir. The population density of the region is very low and has only few permanent settlements. Karzok, situated near the Tso Morari Lake, is the major settlement in Rupshu.

The topography of Rupshu is marked with sweeping deserts segregated by narrow ranges with lofty passes that offer a stunning view of the surrounding landscape. The peaks of Zanskar and Ladakh ranges and the crystalline lakes of Tso Morari and Pangong add to its scenic bliss.

Other spots worth visiting is the Tankse Village while a trip to Chang La and Chendey and Trakthok monasteries will be an interesting excursion.

Rupshu is serviced thrice – a – week by the Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation from Kargil. Accommodations are available at Padum, Strongdey and Karsha.
