Royal Monastery




Royal Monastery, an 8th century structure, is located at Parihasapura in Srinagar District, Jammu and Kashmir. The monastery is near to the ruined stupa. To the southern side of the monastery, there is a Chaitya built by Lalitaditya. The entrance of the chaitya is through the eastern side which can be accessed by a flight of steps. The architecture of the Chaitya resembles that of ancient Egyptian buildings. Some massive blocks are found in the hall which are believed to have been used in Kashmiri temples.

This monastery is a quadrangle of 26 cells enclosing a square courtyard. The verandah can be reached by a flight of steps at the eastern wall. The arcade which runs along the edge of the plinth supports the roof. There is a large stone trough which is believed to have been the water reservoir of the monastery. This pre-historic monastery was repaired in subsequent periods.

Parihasapura can be accessed by road from Srinagar. The nearest airport is Srinagar Airport.
