Red Gram (Botanical name, Cajanus cajanis) is one of the important leguminous plants of semi-arid tropics. It can be grown on a variety of soil textures ranging from sandy soils to heavy clays. It is also known as Pigeon pea.
Red Gram is adaptable to wide varying climates, can even tolerate drought and high temperature. The inflorescence is an axillary raceme often forming a terminal panicle. The flowers are self-pollinated. Red gram is also grown with groundnut, paddy and tapioca.
