Ramabai Ranade

The wife of Justice Mahadev Govind Ranade, Ramabai Ranade was one of the women pioneers in India’s renaissance.

Born on January 25, 1862, Ramabai primarily worked for female education and widow remarriage in association with her husband. She was married to Ranade at the age of 11, and it was from him Ramabai received moral as well as spiritual education.

Ramabai’s contributions include the establishment of an organization named Women’s Suffrage Movement in 1921 in Mumbai. She also founded an establishment for imparting free primary education to girls.

The memoir she made on the death of her husband gives a complete account of her early marriage, education and their life together until Ranada’s death in 1901. Ramabai died in 1924.
