Chhatrapati Shivaji spent almost 25 -30 years here. It was from here Shivaji left for Agra and spent several months in the custody of Aurangazeb. After the death of Shivaji in 1704, Aurangazeb captured the fort. Later, the Marathas recaptured the fort, and it was handed over to the British in 1818.

The fort is a paradise for trekkers. The most important place in the fort is Padmavati Machi, with two houses, lake and a temple. The temple is an ancient shrine and a place for the trekkers to rest. Suvela Machi, Sanjivani Machi, Chor Darwaja and Pali Darwaja are the other interesting spots within the fort.
