Punchinello Butterfly

Punchinello butterfly (Zemeros flegyas), chocolate brown in colour, is distributed on open and sunny areas of the forest, especially near watercourses. It is very nervous like other species in the group (the metalmarks and judies). The wingspan is about 3-4 cm. Small white spots are seen on the upper surface of the wings and each bordered inwardly by a black spot.

During March to October, Punchinello butterfly is seen largely in Shillong.
