Pugal Chola Nayanar

Pugal Chola Nayanar, one of the 63 nayanars, was a king. Uraiyur of Chola kingdom is the place where he lived. Pugal Chola Nayanar was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and his Bhaktas (devotees.)

Once he made a battle with King Adigan. Unfortunately his troops killed a Shiva bhakta and placed the head at the King's feet. This incident made him upset. Pugal Chola Nayanar prepared a fire and entered the fire, placing the head on a golden plate in hand chanting Panchakshara Mantra.
