Psyllium (Plantago ovata) is an annual herb that grows on dry open places. It belongs to the family Plantaginaceae.
The dried seeds and seed husks of the herb possess demulcent, emollient and laxative properties. Psyllium is reputed for the treatment of constipation, dysentery, abdominal pain and piles. It is also recognized as a preventative of atherosclerosis.
