Almost all the full fledged temples in south India feature a courtyard. This courtyard situated in front of the sanctum is called Prangana. This courtyard basically functions as a space for accommodating the devotees. Some devotees even undertake a ritual of rolling on the courtyard as an act of displaying their devotion towards the deity.
