Pradosha Vrata

Pradosha Vrata is a special fasting observed by the Hindus on the evening of the 13th day of each lunar fortnight. The word ‘pradosha’ means ‘dusk’, and this particular period is considered as the best time to worship Lord Shiva. Even Hindu mythology consists of instances in which the gods, tormented by the demons, used to worship Lord Shiva during the dusk. He said to hear the grievances of the devotees and fulfill their wishes during the dusk. It is said that even a simple gesture of lighting a lamp for the lord brings great benefit to the devotees. During the auspicious event of Pradosha Vrata, the devotees usually observe a fast. Special prayers are offered to Lord Shiva, Parvati, Lord Ganesh, Lord Kartikeya and Nandi. Along with the prayers, the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is repeated 108 times. In some temples verses from the Skanda Purana are recited. If the day of Pradosha Vrata falls on Monday, Saturday or Sunday, it is considered as most auspicious.
