Pomegranate




Pomegranate (Punica granatum), a small tree with high valued fruits, is commercially planted in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. This crop can tolerate drought, salinity and saline irrigation water.

The peel contains tannins and ursolic acid. Extracts of the fruit rind and root bark have antibacterial property. It is used in diarex (diarcare) and dental cream. Propagation is by cuttings, air and ground layering.

Ganesh, muskat, jyothi, jaloreseedless, jodhapur red, dholka, seedless and arakta are some of the known varieties.
