Pied Cuckoo (Clamator Jacobinus), a largish cuckoo of about 33 cm in length, is one of India’s two crested cuckoos. It is also known as Jacobin Cuckoo. Adult birds are black above with a prominent crest, small head, curved bill and white-tipped long tail. It has white underparts. Young ones are browner above and yellowish-white below.
The bird perches in a characteristic way with the tail slightly raised. Pied Cuckoo feeds on a variety of insects and caterpillars. It is a noisy species, with a persistent and loud 'pipew pipew pipew' call.
Pied Cuckoo can be seen in the Naharh Wildlife Sanctuary, Harayana.
