The Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta) is a medium to large wader. Its bill is black and the legs and feet are pale gray or blue-gray in color. The bill is long upturned and the legs are long and pale gray. The general plumage is slightly pied.
The bird nests on open ground, often in small groups, sometimes with other waders. Usually three to five eggs are laid in a lined scrape or on a mound of vegetation. The birds forage in shallow brackish water or on mud flats, often sweeping their bills from side to side in water. Diet consists of insects, crustaceans, worms and small fish.
Pied Avocet prefers shallow water in estuaries and lagoons, marine shores and dams.
