Pathala Ponniamman Temple

Pathala Ponniamman Temple is a 300-year-old shrine located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The temple enshrines a Panchaloha idol of Goddess Ponniamman. Sapta Annanmaar - the seven children born to Devaki before the birth of Lord Krishna - who are the elder brothers of Kali, are worshipped here.

The idol of the temple was found in the pit dug for a well; hence people addressed her as ‘Pathala Ponniamman.’ It is customary to worship Pathala Ponniamman first before commencing any festival in any temple in and around Purasawakkam.

Large numbers of people worship the goddess with ardent devotion. Navratri Festival, celebrated with much pomp and splendor, is a major draw.

Pathala Ponniamman Temple is situated near the junction of Millers Road, Alagappa Road and Flowers Road, in Chennai.
