Pateti is celebrated on the eve of New Year of the Zoroastrian calendar, on the month of August. It is the day to take account of the wrongs or sins one may have committed the previous year. The word 'pateti' is derived from pazend patet, meaning 'repentance'.
The houses are cleaned and decorated with
rangoli and
torans (festoons). Families get together and sweets and gifts are exchanged. Thanksgiving prayers are offered in
fire temples. Special delicacies such as patra ni macchi (fish wrapped in banana leaves), sali boti (meat with potato chips) and falooda are prepared.
