Pasanabheda is a perennial herb with stout rootstock.
The dried rhizomes contain bergenin, gallic acid, glucose, mucilage, and wax. The drug shows astringent, tonic, antiscorbutic, and laxative activities. It is prescribed as a remedy for pulmonary affection, dysentery, ulcers, dysuria, spleen enlargement, cough and fever. It is also useful in dissolving kidney stones.
