Paralakhemundi is the district headquarters of
Gajapati District in
Orissa. It was an erstwhile princely state and the Gajapati rulers of Paralakhemundi were powerful rulers of the area. In the 20th century, they represented the state in various spheres.
Bhubaneswar is about 250 km north-east of Paralakhemundi. Nearest airport is at Visakhapatnam. Rayagada Railway Station is the nearest major railhead.
