Panchavarneswarar Temple




Panchavarneswarar Temple is located at Uraiyur in Tiruchirapalli District. The place Uraiyur, also known as Kozhimanagaram, has historic importance as it was the ancient capital of the early Cholas. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the sanctum faces east, whereas the shrine of Goddess Kantimathi in the southern direction. There are separate shrines for Vinayakar, Subramanyar and Mahalakshmi. There are images of Ganesh, Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu, Bhrahma and Durga found in the temple premises. The temple teertham is Panchavarna Theertham and the sthala vriksham (sacred tree) is vilvam. The main festivals are the annual Bhramotsavam celebrated in the month of Vaikasi (mid May - mid June), and the Panchapraharam festival in the month of Aadi (mid July - mid August).
