Panchagavya

Panchagavya is a mixture of cow’s milk, curd, ghee, urine and dung. The word ‘gavya’ is a term used for each individual product derived from the cow, while ‘pancha’ means five. The cow being a sacred animal of the Hindus, its products are considered to have medicinal qualities.

Panchagavya finds mention in many ancient texts, including those related to Ayurveda. Various chronic diseases and ailments like eczema, psoriasis, obesity and blood pressure are believed to be curable by this mixture. Apart from health, it has great significance in rituals. It is one of the important offerings made to the ‘Yagna’, sacrificial fire. It is even said that by consuming the Panchagavya the sins are washed away.
