Padmashri Sirkali Dr. S. Govindarajan




Padmashree Sirkali Dr. S. Govindarajan is a maestro of Indian classical, devotional and film music. He has an excellent voice range and tonal purity. He was born on Jan 19, 1933 to Siva Chidambaram and Avayambal Ammal. He hails from Sirkali which was the birth place of Thirugnana Sambandar, one of the Samaya Naalvar and the 63 Nayanmar of the Saiva faith. His debut performance was at the age of eight at Tirupurasundari Temple during the Gnana Paal Festival.

He has performed in countries such as U K, U S A, Canada, Europe-France, Germany, Switzerland, Malaysia, Singapore, SriLanka, Nepal and Mauritius. His first play back song was ‘Siripputhan Varuguthaiya' in the movie, Kalki's Ponvayal. A handful of devotional and patriotic songs also fame his name.

He was honored by the President of India with Padmashree. In 1983, the Madras University, in its Post-Centenary Celebrations, awarded him a honorary doctorate. He was elected one of the Secretaries of the Sri Thyaga Brahma Mahotsava Sabha at Thiruvaiyaru. In 1984, he was appointed Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts, Annamalai University.
