Oil Palm (Elaeis guineensis) is a tropical oil seed plant seen in warm climates at altitudes of less than 1,600 ft. A versatile oil of excellent nutritional value is isolated from this tree.
Oil palm can be grown on a variety of soil textures, but sandy and hard laterite soils are harmful. This cross-pollinated crop has both male and female flowers on the same tree. Fruits are dark purple and spherical, ovoid or elongated. The fruits yield two types of oil - palm oil (from the pulp) and palm kernel oil (from the kernel).
