Odabhandeshwara Temple




Odabhandeshwara Temple is a 13th century temple located near Malpe, a natural harbor, 6 km from Udupi. The temple is dedicated to Lord Balram. According to Hindu mythology, Balrama is the incarnation of Sesha or Adisesha, symbol of strength and protector from desires. Tradition recounts that Madhwacharya, propounder of Dwaita philosophy, while meditating saw a ship in danger. With his spiritual powers he saved the ship from wrecking. On the ship he saw the idols of Balrama and Krishna and the Balrama idol was installed at Odabhandeshwara and the Krishna idol in Udupi. To reach this place, Mangalore Airport is the nearest airport. Udupi Railway Station is the nearby railway access.
