Snake Wood or Strychnous Tree



Nux-vomica (Botanical name, Strychnous nux vomica) is an evergreen or deciduous tree found in tropical areas, growing up to a height of 1360 m. Shudha kupilu, Vishamushti, Kuchla, and Kuchila are its other accepted names. The leaves of the plant are glabrous, broadly elliptic obtuse, entire and with prominent central nerves. The flowers are greenish white in terminal compound cymes. Nux-vomica is considered to be stimulant, aphrodisiac, and tonic. It is used for nervous disorders. The seeds contain the major alkaloids strychnine, brucine and vomicine and the minor alkaloids a -colubrine, ß-colubrine, pseudostrychnine and sec-pseudobrucine.
