National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, formerly known as Regional Engineering College, Durgapur, was established in 1960. The institute is located about 160 km north-west of Kolkata on the Howrah-Delhi railway route and facing the Grand Trunk Road.
A Deemed University, the institute awards BTech, MTech, MCA and PhD degrees in the disciplines of chemical, civil, computer science and engineering, electrical, electronics and communication, mechanical and metallurgical engineering and information technology. A few seats are reserved by the Central Government for foreign students.
