Narak Chaturdashi

Narak Chaturdashi is the day before Diwali and is also known as Chhoti Diwali.

On this occasion, an effigy of the ‘Narkasur’ demon is made with paper, filled with grass, waste papers, crackers and other combustible materials. This effigy, which is taken out in a procession is cursed, insulted and finally burnt to ashes. Following this cremation ceremony, people return to their home and take a bath.

The women pay respect to the men by moving a plate in circular motion, containing lighted oil lamps, around the head of men. The men respond by gifting the women with cash or other gift items. This ritual is followed by crushing of a bitter gourd by the fingers of the left foot, and applying it on the tongue. Sweets are consumed after paying respect to the Lord and the elders.
