Naneghat

Naneghat is an ancient mountain pass from Ghatmatha to Konkan in the Malshej region of Thane District. It is at an altitude of 2750 feet. The suitable base villages are Vaishakhare (from Mumbai) and Ghatghar (from Pune).

Naneghat lies along an ancient trade route which transported goods from the costal ports in Konkan to the market centers of Junnar, Pune and Nashik. The route flourished during the age of Satavahanas. The cave in Naneghat has stone inscriptions in Brahmi language. The caves in the pass are ideal for lodging. Water is abundantly available in the nearby rock-cut water cisterns. The cliff over Naneghat has the peak named Nanacha Angatha, a popular spot for rock climbing. There is a fort on the plateau above called Jeevdhan.
