Monjaher Taeher

Monjhaer Taeher is celebrated at the end of the Hindu month of Margasheersh (November-December) in Jammu and Kashmir. ‘Monjaher’ means ‘margasheersh’ in Kashmiri. ‘Taeher’ means yellow cooked rice mixed with mustard.

It is customary for Kashmiris to cook such rice on all auspicious days. On the day of ‘Monjaher taeher’, the rice is specially cooked and offered to ‘griha devata’ (house deity) and ‘grama devata’ (village deity) and then distributed. It is said that if any of his wishes are fulfilled then the household should prepare the rice regularly on this particular day, every year.
