Mint is a glabrous perennial herb with running rootstocks and rigid branching stem. It is also known as pudina, hill mint and pahari pudina.
It is reported to be a carminative and expectorant. Carvone, terpenes and alcohol are isolated from the plant oil. The plant oil is one of the principle ingredients in chewing gums, toothpastes, confectionery and pharmaceutical preparations.
In India, it is grown chiefly in hilly areas and it grows well in Jammu and Kashmir, up to an altitude of 1500 m.
