Meena Kumari

Meena Kumari (1932-1972) is often referred to as the tragedy queen of Bollywood cinema. She started her career as a child artist and established her fame as an actress through the movie Baiju Bawre. She made outstanding performance in movies such as Daera, Do Bigha Zameen, Parineeta, Phool Aur Pathar, and Pakeezah. In most of the films, she played the role of the perpetually suffering Indian woman. The renowned film director Kamal Amrohi was her husband. A gifted poet, Meena wrote under the pseudonym Naaz. The collection of poems, Tanha Chand, was published after her death.
