Matho Monastery




Matho Monastery, founded by Lama Dugpa Dorje, is on the opposite banks of the Indus River across Thiksey. It is 26 km south-east of 50787Leh.

This five hundred years old monastery is the only Saskya monastic establishment in Leh District. A fine collection of ancient thankas, some in the form of mandalas, can be seen here. Also found is a sacred shrine, which is dedicated to the guardian deities.

Matho Monastery is the venue for Matho Nagrang festival, during which monks perform sacred dances.
