Margasheersh is the 9th month of the
Hindu Calendar. According to the Gregorian calendar, it falls between mid-November and mid-December. The time from the months of Jyeshta to Margasheersh is considered as auspicious. The remaining months are considered inauspicious since
Lord Vishnu is believed to be asleep during this period.
On the full moon day of this month, Datta Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Dattatreya. Manikya Prabhu Jayanti, dedicated to Lord Manikya Prabhu, is celebrated in Andhra Pradesh at this time. Observances such as Subh-Vrata and Matsya-Dwadashi Vrata are also carried out in the month of Margasheersh.
