Mangosteen is a tropical fruit-bearing tree, which is hard to grow on a commercial scale. It is naturalized in Malabar,
Tirunelveli, and
Nilgiris, at elevations of 300 to 1,000 m.
It is very sensitive to extreme climatic conditions and soil textures. Extreme heat or cold, dry atmosphere, and dry soils are harmful to these crops. Propagation is mainly by seed.
