Mallaha Songs

Mallaha is a term used to describe a boatman or a fisherman. These people have their own songs related to their occupation. These songs, called Mallahi, are prevalent in the northern states of India, where Hindi is the dominant language.

The Mallahi songs often contain prayers dedicated to River Ganges , who is addressed as a goddess. The songs are usually sung in a boat. The rhythm often matches the sound of oars used in the rowing.
